The sun sign behind most general horoscopes
When someone asks for your zodiac sign, they usually mean your sun sign. In the tropical zodiac, this is the sign containing the sun’s calculated position at your birth. A date list gives a practical approximation, but the year and time can matter near a transition between signs. A general horoscope uses this sign as its starting point; it does not calculate your complete birth chart.
A moon sign refers to a different position
A moon sign describes the moon’s position within the same chosen zodiac. It need not match your sun sign. Astrological interpretations often associate the moon with familiarity, feelings and habits. This is a symbolic association, not a measurement of your emotions or a medical description. You learn about your actual feelings by attending to your experience and circumstances.
The ascendant connects time and location
The ascendant is the point of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at a particular moment. The birth time and place therefore matter alongside the date. An inaccurate time can lead to a different calculated position. Astrology uses the ascendant in interpretations of how a person presents themselves, among other themes. That remains interpretation; it does not prove how other people experience you.
What if you do not know your birth time?
An unknown time is best treated as unknown. Entering an arbitrary time does not make a calculation accurate. You may find information in a personal birth document or from someone who attended the birth, although memories can be uncertain. Check which assumptions a calculation tool uses. AstroNivo explains these terms; its general zodiac writing does not require personal birth information.
